Comedian And TV Host Jonathan Slocumb Partners With Chicago Skin Care Company Solo Noir

Chicago, Illinois, March 8, 2013 – The city of Chicago has become synonymous with epic bouts of senseless violent deaths with its youth especially Black-on-Black and gang related crimes. Even President Barack Obama said during a speech last month at an anti-firearms rally in Chicago, “Last year, there were 443 murders with a firearm on the streets of this city, and 65 of those victims were 18 and under. So that’s the equivalent of Newtown every four months”. Actor/comedian/TV host Jonathan Slocumb is putting his name and resources to change the mindset of young Black men and boys around the country. The Los Angeles resident recently inked an endorsement deal to become the first national spokesman for Chicago-based company Solo Noir, which makes a complete line of grooming products for men of color featuring 100% organic 2-in-1 grooming products. As a part of his deal with Solo Noir he will be partnering with them to make visits to high schools, HBCUs, other colleges and community centers around the country. He will speak to young Black men about the importance of taking pride in how they physically present themselves, i.e. dressing for success, keeping their hands, face and skin well groomed and maintaining positive body language and a positive mindset. Slocumb is a firm believer that if you change the way a man dresses and thinks you will eventually change how he acts. –

Solo Noir: Sleek 2-in-1 (Pre-Shave + Shave Cream)

From The Men’s Room.com It’s always great to try out new products that have entered the men’s grooming marketplace! So needless to say, when Solo Noir offered their full range of products that are not only 100% organic but also developed for ethnic men, I welcomed the opportunity.

Using a very streamlined approach, Solo Noir offers 5 products that cover all aspects of men’s skincare. Since one of the biggest challenges ethnic men have is related to shaving, I chose their shave cream as the first to be reviewed in order to offer an idea on how this cream competes with other shave creams in this category. It is a lotion based cream that can be used as a stand alone pre-shave prep or both a pre-shave and shave cream.

Upon application to a damp face, it delivers a nice subtle fragrance and a surprisingly welcome beard-softening creamy layer. It’s packed with quite a few ingredients like Aloe, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter and Castor Oil, that allow for a“sleek”, comfortable, and close shave. As a newbie on the scene, this shave cream can definitely compete!

Skin Care for Men of Color

Recently I have had some minor skin challenges with it being hot outside and looking for a good product to help smooth out my situation.  I happened to come upon Solo Noir a skin care company that makes skin care products for ethnic men.  First of all I was impressed by the packaging and when I used the products I loved them.  We reached out to Andrea Polk the company founder to get more information on Solo Noir so we can inform our customers on their great products.  If you are like me and want clear smooth skin be sure to read this blog and support Solo Noir, you won’t be disappointed.

Solo Noir, a skin care product line for ethnic men is a newbie in the market but they are making some major heads turn.  Within just a few months they have landed a partnership contract with #32 on the Bears Kahlil Bell, and landed on the shelves in a few local businesses all in the hopes of becoming a market leader in the urban skin care arena. Solo Noir features five 2-in-1 products that help moisturize and protect, address ingrown hairs, and promote a healthy appearance.  The product although small in number pack a big punch in volume, Solo Noir features a facial cleanser/toner, exfoliante/cleanser, pre-shave/shave cream, aftershave/toner, and skin smoother/conditioner.

Andrea Polk and Solo Noir

BEHIND THE SCENES: Andrea Polk Founder of Solo Noir for Men

We recently had the opportunity to interview Andrea Polk, founder of Solo Noir, an ethnic skin care line for men founded in October 2011.  You may be wondering why a woman would create a product exclusively for men.  Simply put, there really wasn’t any niche for ethnic men’s skin care so Andrea created one.  She first shared her idea with a group of friends including a creative designer and a social media expert.  Next she spent years researching organic chemists to support her mission to create all natural skin care products.  Andrea’s final piece to the puzzle was finding a turnkey company that handles the packaging, labels, and shipping of Solo Noir.  She sent her artwork and formula to the turnkey company who made a few minor tweaks and then Andrea’s vision came to life.

Solo Noir makes grooming for men easy while keeping their skin fresh and healthy.  The line offers men a complete grooming kit of 2-in-1 organic products that help moisturize the skin, assist in the prevention of ingrown hairs, soften course facial hair, and promote smooth skin.  Currently, there are five products in the Solo Noir line each named for positive men’s attributes:

  • “Dapper” Cleanse + Tone
  • “Refined” Buff + Cleanse
  • “Smooth” Skin Conditioner + Smoother
  • “Brave” Aftershave + Toner
  • “Sleek” Pre Shave + Shave Cream

SBM Review & Giveaway: Solo Noir Skin Care for Men

I’m a firm believer in supporting Black entrepreneurs who are clearly on their A-game. So when I got an email from Andrea Polk, founder ofSolo Noir, a provider of organic grooming products for ethnic men, I was curious to hear what she had to say. It turned out she was offering something I hadn’t tried before, but might be a solution to the problems I’ve had with dry and oily skin and shaver’s shadow. You know, the dark skin a lot of Black men get in the areas they shave their face and neck.

Andrea’s a graduate of Tennessee State University with a Bachelor’s in Marketing and a Master’s in Supply Chain Management. She’s also spent four years in the skin care industry, which assured me she didn’t just wake up one day and throw some banana peel and beaver extract into a bottle and call it a natural remedy.  So I said sure, I’ll give her product line a try.

She sent me three products that I’ve come to love (Descriptions gathered from the website and paraphrased):

  • Dapper – A daily 2-in-1 facial cleanser and toner that doesn’t strip natural oils from the face.
  • Refined – A 2-in-1 buff and cleanser that feels like the St. Ives Apricot Scrub that many of us have gotten to know over the years.
  • Smooth – A 2-in-1 skin conditioner and smoother that can also be used a beard conditioner.

I won’t lie. I haven’t been one to try new-to-the-market products on my skin. I’ve typically stayed with the big name brands with massive advertising and marketing budgets. So when I got these in the mail, I prayed to infant mocha Jesus that I didn’t break out into hives or end up watching my face melt before my eyes. And I’m happy to say that after three weeks of using the products, my skin condition has actually improved.
