Your Razor and You

The first known existence of the razor was during the bronze age when they were made out of bronze or obsidian (a naturally occurring volcanic glass) and were curved instead of the straight. We have come a long way since then; today’s manual razor, now made from stainless steel, was created in the 18th century and the electric razor came about in the 1930’s. There are pros and cons to both types of razors and at the end of the day it comes down to a matter of personal preference.

The Manual Razor

PROS

  • Manual razors are easy to use.
  • The blades and equipment are easy to replace.
  • Manual razors are inexpensive.
  • Manual razors are easy to travel with and are easy to clean. And they can also be discarded and replaced with a new one for little cost.
  • Manual razors provide a closer shave than electric razors.

CONS

  • Blades on manual razors need to be replaced frequently usually after only a few shaves.
  • When shaving with a manual razor it is necessary to use a shaving cream and water to create a painless shave.
  • Shaving with a manual razor increases the chance of getting nicks, cuts, and ingrown hairs.

The Electric Razor

PROS

  • It’s faster to shave with an electric razor because you can generally remove all the hair in one pass.
  • Electric razors can be used to shave facial hair, beards, mustaches, and sideburns.
  • When using an electric razor there is no need for shaving creams.
  • Shaving with an electric razor can reduce nicks, cuts, and ingrown hairs.

CONS

  • Some men find that using an electric razor takes practice and in the beginning it can take longer to shave than usual.
  • Electric razors need to be cleaned and maintained properly for them to function.
  • Purchasing and maintaining an electric razor can be more expensive than manual razors although in the long run they can actually save money.
  • Electric razors require batteries and/or an electrical outlet.
